Komen Race Recap - #6!

On Saturday I ran the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure for the 6th time. Here's my 2015 recap, which apparently corresponded with Triangle Restaurant week last year too. Also, here's the 2014 post

Looking back over the posts, I got a little bummed because my face looks a lot smaller in 2014. Grrrr... I was also a little salty because the shirt I wore the last 2 years wasn't working Saturday. I'm just a little frustrated that even after losing 11.5 pounds, I still am not where I was last year. Such BS.

This was the 6th time I've ran this race and it's special because this was the first 5k I ever did, 5 years ago. On Friday when I was leaving Jenny, my consultant told me that "nothing matters, just do your best and try to finish". I was taken aback, this is my 6th year, I've done countless 5ks, a bunch of  10ks and 3 half marathons. I might sleep in and decide not to run, but if I go to a 5k, I'll finish, Walk, run or a combo of both, I'll finish even if I have to drag myself across the finish line.

I thought back to the first time I did Jenny. I started as what Kev likes to call "a sedentary indoor gal". (He's lucky I like him.) But he was right. I never went to the gym, I didn't care about the outdoors, well, I still don't, there are bugs and hot outside.

The majority of my time at Jenny, I was finding my fitness. I went to the gym, but only walked on the treadmill or did the elliptical. Then I moved to group fitness classes in March-ish of 2015 and started couch to 2 5K. Five years ago, the first time I did this race, even though I was 30 pounds lighter there was a definite question as to if  I'd finish. This year, there wasn't a question.

I haven't been running, I've ran maybe 10 times this year. MAYBE. But I wasn't missing this race.

outtake

This year the race moved from Meredith College to RTP. I was meh about the change

Cons:
  • Lack of communication. I received 1 email when I registered and nothing else.
  • Getting off the exit and trying to find the Park and Ride was a pain in the ass. There weren't any signs and it wasn't easy to find
  • Meredith is a super quaint campus and it's a really nice setting. This one was in a parking lot. It really lost a lot of the charm.
  • In the previous years, you run through neighborhoods and there's a LOT of support and spectators along the route. This one was ran on the road, in an industrial park. I saw maybe 3 groups of people on the course to cheer us on.
Pros:
  • OMG IT WAS SO FLAT. I SWEAR IT WAS THE FLATTEST COURSE I'VE EVER RAN SINCE I STARTING RUNNING.
I do love me a flat course. I could have done well if I'd been running at all.

Industrial park

Even though it had moved, and there was still a good turn-out. I heard 8,000 people? I know there were 20,000 a few years ago though.

I hope they get the planning together and there's better participation next year.

I finished in 37 min and change. It's fine, mile 3 was a little tough. Again, I should run more, but overall I was pretty pleased with my time.

I saw my chiropractor Monday after the race and we were both pretty happy that I didn't hurt myself or throw my hips out of place. I had my adjustment and asked what kind of activity I could do this week. He said that normally he'd say that spin class was fine because it's lower impact than running, but since I keep throwing my hips out of place when I ride, go run on the treadmill.

I keep asking him if I can wear a weight belt to the gym. a la Hulk Hogan and he said no. I do have my Hulkamania shirt ready for when he agrees. Oh, I'm totally going as Hulk Hogan for Halloween this year.

Boy, this post has certainly taken a tangent. I did run tonight, on the treadmill, and it was surprisingly good. I didn't cry or die or hurt myself. It's a good day.

When it's hot as heck outside, what do you do?  Treadmill, suck it up and go outside or don't run until September?

Weekly Weigh-in #7

If you saw my Instagram (which you should because I'm so much funnier in pictures), I lost 1.4 last in 6 days! Hey, I'll take it after being all sorts of sad with that .2 gain last week. I really focused on the basics. Drinking my water, not taking extra little tastes and bites of things. I didn't make it to the gym as often as I'd have liked, but more on that in a few. Also, no gum. When I think about it, I've lost 11 1/2 pounds in 7 weeks. If I keep this pace up, that would put me at -46 pounds in 28 weeks and at goal. It would also be half as long as it took me to lose the weight the last time. I probably can't keep this up, but how awesome would it be if I did?? It's just a good reminder of how persistence pays off.

Workouts
Remember last week when I posted that one of m June goals was to not get injured? Yea, it's because my back and hip hasn't been feeling right. I was paranoid that one of my 2 old injuries was coming back. I had some strange shooting pain in my groin area and I was really nervous. Sunday night wasn't awesome, I had ice and laying flat. I went to my chiropractor Monday. I've been seeing him for 8 years. Mostly for maintence but he fixes me when I get hurt too. After a pretty good session Monday and Weds, I was feeling much better.

Saturday - Body Pump
Sunday - Rest
Monday - Chiropractor - He said I could get on the rowing machine or do arms. Meh
Tuesday - Body Flow (yoga)
Wednesday - Chropractor in the afternoon, then I went to Spin (not my best idea)
Thursday - I should rest
Friday - I really should rest so I don't die at my race Saturday morning.

What I'm eating this week

Everything was pretty much on plan, I did have the fish and chips which made me pretty happy. Especially since I got some Malt Vinegar.

Picture
Week 7 picture.

I've worn this skirt before and I thought I had a little less low belly. I was a little frustrated because I tried on some pants that I wore last summer and they didn't fit well. They buttoned, but uncomfortably, which pissed me off because it means I gained at least 15 pounds over the last year, which is complete BS. I've never gained that much in a year. I know it was partly because I was grounded from working out for months while I was having PT on my hip, but still.

Cheats
Kev and I went out to the Angus Barn on Saturday night and I had 4-5oz of prime rib, a salad and some steamed veggies. I also had 3 crackers with some spready cheese, a few olives and some pickles.

Sunday we had a potluck at the house and I made a blueberry crumb cake, blueberry muffins and chocolate chip cookies. I didn't eat any, but I did have a little bit of dough from the bowl. I guess it wasn't too bad, I still had a loss. :)

So, on to another week and hopefully another loss!

Scenes from the weekend

Before I get started, I need to acknowledge the tragedy in Orlando. Yes, this is a mass shooting, but more than that, it's an act of hate. Hatred of someone who's not like you. Hatred because someone doesn't love what you love. Hatred that fills and grows and causes fear and distrust. We are better than this.

For the last few Monday's I've been posting my weigh-in recaps, and while I've liked it, I don't get to recap the weekends. I don't know, it seems kinda dumb to post the recap on Tuesday. So, this week I'm going to swap them and do the weekend thing first and the weigh-in tomorrow.

Alrighty, My weekend re-cap starts on Friday. I actually weighed in Friday morning because I had a 5K at 730am and actually getting weighed afterwards seemed like a really bad idea.

When I was meeting with my conusltant I told her that I was having the oddest craving for a Subway veggie sub. I'd wanted one for the last 3 weeks and hadn't acted on it. The last time I was on JC, the Subway veggie sub was my go-to "I'm out and holy shit I'm hungry, what am I going to eat" option. She told me to get one and that translated one to one for lunch.

You know how sometimes you haven't had something for a while and the first time you do, it's like the very best one YOU'VE EVER HAD? Yea, that was this sandwich. Good lord it was good.

Then I had my grande skinny vanilla latte (1 pump SF vanilla) because you know, milk serving.

OK, one of the benefits of weighing in on Friday is that you have an extra day to work it off. :) The other craving I'd been having was for sushi. There were still a few days left in Triangle Restaurant week and I talked Kevin into going to Ajisai Japanese Fusion. It's in Cameron Village and I'd never been there before. I was pretty impressed.

Started with a Cosmo, obviously.

During Restaurant week you get a 3 course meal for $30.  Kev and I both started with the seared tuna that had some sort of delicious roe on top and a drizzle of a lemon oil? My brother got the Rock Shrimp which was almost like a less breaded, less saucy Bang Bang Shrimp.

It tasted a lot better than it photographed

I went with the sushi platter. I'll be honest, I don't remember what was in it, but I got the sauce on the side and it was super tasty. It was raw fish and rice and little spicy. Yum...

For dessert there was a choice of mochi ice cream or tempura banana. Kev and my brother got the ice cream and I went with the banana. Everyone agreed that the banana was way better than the mochi.

I don't like bananas. Even deep fried and covered in whipped cream, still don't like 'em.

I had a relatively early night since I had to wake up at 6am and leave for the race. it's not all that much earlier than I get up for work, so no biggie.  It was in a new location this year, and I have some thoughts on that, which I'll share in another post.

It was supposed to be in the 90s here, but thankfully they moved the race earlier this year (8:30 last year) and it was still in the 70s when we started and finished. For someone who's run fewer than 10 times this year, I did pretty well and didn't die.

On my way home I stopped at Jenny and got my food for the week. I paid for my order the day before. I was doing some reflection when I was there, I ran my first 5k when I was almost at the end of my first Jenny loss and here I am again, 5 years later. More on that later.

I got home, showered ate, and we all headed to the Durham Farmer's Market. I'd have pictures, but by the time we got there, everything was pretty much sold out. I got some zucchini though.

We got home, whined about the heat and later I went to the mall to look for some new shirts. I'm in an odd place where my old stuff doesn't fit yet, some does, but some is too big and I swear I don't remember what I wore last year. Maybe nothing but dresses? Because I have no shirts right now.

So, off I went to try and find something that wasn't too flowy because I'd only have a few months to wear it. I was looking for something not too tight, but would be wearable maybe after I lost all the weight. Yea, not an easy task.

I wanted to kill myself and everyone else in Old Navy and left with 0 things. I did score a top at the Limited, the NY &Co outlet and 2 sparkly tanks at Express.

But perhaps my biggest haul was at Bath and Body Works. Every year they release some retro scents from the archives. Well my friends, this year they released a staple of 90s Lara. Sun Ripped Raspberry! I went last week and they'd released it early, I bought 6 bottles and they gave me a coupon for $10 off $40. When I got there, all the retro scents were ONLY $3.75!!

So that happened.

I could finally get my Country Apple and Cucumber Melon.

I'm stocked up now.

The rest of the night was spent watching some random documentaries.

Sunday was laundry / cleaning the kitchen / grocery shopping.

I saw this at Target, has anyone tried it??

I have to say, is anyone else sick and tired of everyone trying to push the Target Red Card on you? I don't want it. Yes, I know I can save 5%, I understand there's a debit and a credit card. They try to overcome my objections to the card by telling me about the $ I can save and how it's not a credit card. I DON'T CARE. That's not my objection to the card, you can't sell something if you don't understand why someone doesn't want it. Target, I don't trust your security. I was effected by the breech in 2014 and it was an inconvenient pain in the ass. The absolute last thing I want to do is give you direct access to my bank account. There's no way in hell I'd get a credit card from Target either. I already have a credit card, I don't want another.

This time, the lady behind me in line tried to sell me on the card. Honestly, it makes me not want to go there anymore. Me saying one time that I'm not interested should be more than enough for you.

Since I was annoyed at Target, I needed to go to yoga and relax.

Me and Biggie heading to yoga.

Now I'm blogging and watching the Tony's. Just waiting for Hamilton to slay every category.

How was your weekend?

Best retro Bath and Body scent??

As a Kid, I Thought These Things Would Be a Much Bigger Problem.

Was it just me or did the week speed by? I guess it's a good thing. Anytime a week speeds by and it's one day away from the weekend, I'm good.

Keep your fingers crossed for me, I'm weighing in this morning instead of tomorrow. Saturday is the Komen Race for the Cure 5k and this will be the 6th year I've run it. Yea, I haven't ran in a loooong time. An embarrassing long time. If I can just make it through without injuring myself, that would be awesome.

Alright, I've been thinking about this post for a while. When I was a kid we were constantly being told about things that would be dangerous and how we should look out for them. Like constantly. You know what, these things never happened. Never. It's like when I freshman in college and they made all of us watch a movie about the dangers of grain alcohol and how you'd get really drunk and boys would touch your boobs. Then they gave all of us rape whistles.

Well, given the recent events on college campuses, maybe that wasn't the worst thing.

Anyways, I really. really thought these things would be an issue.

1. PCP.

Please, please tell me you've seen this after school special where a young Helen Hunt is coaxed to try some angel dust by her boyfriend and she freaks out and jumps put the window. It's worth the 4 minutes.

And it wasn't just this movie, in school and other specials, everyone was just waiting to lace your other drugs (usually weed) with PCP. As a matter of fact, we were expressly told to watch out for weed laced with Angel Dust. I guess weed wasn't an issue? This was the era of Nancy Regan and "Just Say No", maybe that was why? Was this an epidemic in the 80s? Because I swear no one has mentioned it since then.

2. Quicksand

Wasn't quicksand on every cartoon and show? Like seriously, I thought quicksand would be everywhere. Going for a hike in the woods? How can I escape the quicksand? Look where you walk, quicksand. Carry a stick to help you get out of quicksand. I still remember that you aren't supposed to struggle, just try and stay still and look for a branch or vine to help pull yourself out.

3. Anvils

Based on the number of anvils I've seen in cartoons, I thought they'd be a lot more present in real life. I think I've seen 5 anvils in my life and they've all been at either the Renaissance fair, state fair or Williamsburg VA. Were there more anvils in the 50s and 60s? Why did the cartoonists choose to use anvils? Not a clue.

4. Vans

Ok, this was based in fact because there was apparently a local girl who was abducted by someone in a van. But we were terrified of vans and people in vans and people trying to lure kids into vans. Maybe someone is all "Gee Lara, aren't you lucky, I escaped 5 van abductions". Add that to that scene is Silence of the Lambs and vans are nothing but abduction wagons. I still think this is an issue. Never trust a windowless van.

5. Killer Bees

I must have seen at least 10 specials or segments on killer bees as a kid. How they tried to breed the Africanized bees with the happy honey bees so they'd make more honey. Instead the asshole bees killed the other hives and escaped and started traveling north. I even remember a map and a timeline of when we could expect the killer bees to get to our area.

Apparently Killer bees love to eat thrown kitchen wastes such as hamburger, meat, cheese, spaghetti, and fish.Who knew? But they might still be making their way north, but I swear it was supposed to happen sometime in the early 2000s

What about you? What did you think would be a bigger issue than it turned out to be?

A Few Questions and Answers...

Hidey Ho everyone. I was thinking about my post fr today and I had a great idea but I need at least 5 if these random things to talk about since 3 isn't enough and 4 is an even number. But this list is 48 things, which is even, but it's OK. Don't ask, please don't, because I can't really explain it.
MKay. I came across this quiz on a few blogs and on FB and I thought it would be fun to do. It's a little long so grab a snack or something.

I could maybe go to Chicago and see... wait for it... Alexander Camelton
13.  Been to Nashville– I was there for work several years ago but that was before camera phones and Facebook, so I have no memories of it.
14.  Visited Florida– Yes, a few times for cruises and 3x just recently for vacation and Kappa Delta stuff.

Weekly Weigh-in #6

Yep, not a great weigh-in. I honestly don't have any idea why I gained. None. I ate on plan, we did have dinner out on Saturday, where I had 2 adult beverages, but I also had 6 days to work it off. I worked out 3 different days, it's not TOM, nothing.

I think the worst part is that I didn't do anything to earn a gain. Like if I ate all the delicious food and had cookies and booze and had a gain, THAT would be fine, but when you don't do anything, it sucks.

So, what changed? Over the last 2 weeks I re-introduced gum into my routine. I used to chew a lot of gum back in the day, then I developed an allergy to aspartame and literally ALL gum has aspartame in it. Except for cinnamon Trident. But cinnamon Trident is full of chemicals. Over the last 2 weeks, I had quite a bit of gum. Like really too much. Caloricaly it wasn't enough to gain, but the chemicals and artificial sweeteners could result in a stall/gain. Yea, no more gum. I'll try that and see if the scale moves in the right direction this week. It was odd, I was really feeling a 3 pound loss and the gain was a shock to me.

I'm also a little freaked out to have a gain this early on in the process. I don't remember it happening the last time, but it probably did.

Workouts
Saturday - Body Pump
Sunday - I felt like I had a bit of a cold and Kev grounded me from working out
Monday - Still grounded
Tuesday - Still grounded
Wednesday - Running late to Spin class, got in 30ish min of the class then yoga
Thursday - 45 min Spin
Friday - Nada, we went to First Friday Downtown

What I'm eating this week
Obviously a lot of gum. Really though, I've been wanting sushi. Sushi and a Veggie Sub from Subway. Don't ask why, I have no idea. I think because I ate a lot of them the last time I was on JC. I had plans for both this upcoming week, but no loss= no other foods.

Picture

I have on full body shapewear here. I know the jacket covers it up, but this was the only outfit shot I go this week. The last time I wore this dress, I was a solid 10+ pounds more. It definitely fits better than it did before.

Oh, don't forget! The GYPO Summer Style is OPEN now! Go here to sign up. You'll get the list of pieces, the 2016 wardrobe, the 2015 wardrobe and an awesome community of fellow fashionistas. I'm a big fan because it made me use pieces in my closet I hadn't in a very long time and things that I'd never thought to put together. Great experience and you all should do it. ;)

Cheats
Really, I ate on plan every day except Saturday. We went to Vin Rouge and I had tartar and frites. I also had 2 cosmos. That night I didn't skip my dessert either, I ate my  Lemon Cookies when we got home since we ate kind of on the early side. I said it before, I wish I had a giant cheat and earned that gain this week.

Monthly Goals
Last month I posted my goals.

I did a pretty good job on all of these, but missed the weight loss by .4 pounds. I'll take 7.6 though. I stuck to the JC plan and each week I worked out at least 3 times. Overall, not too shabby. I'll take it.

What's the plan for June?

I haven't been running. I've run like once since February. Did I mention I have a 5K next Saturday? I'm so screwed. I need to run more, even if it's on the treadmill. Since I didn't lose 8 last month, I'll try again in June. Finally, I need to not get injured. Really, I've been feeling a little twinges in my lower back and I need to be careful. I have a chiropractor appt this week and I need to foam roll. My muscles tend to lock up and push things out of place. I haven't worked out this hard since my last round of PT and I'm concerned that I might throw everything out of wack. Chiropractor, ice, foam roll, let's stay healthy.

Alright, here's to a better week!

Five Thing Friday

Hi again, it's Friday! Hooray! Even though this was only a 4 day week, it was jam packed full of all kinds of work and interesting things. I'm definitely ready for the weekend.

Summer is right around the corner, well, it's kinda here in NC. The 90 degree days have begun and that means I spend even more time trying to figure out what to wear. I was trying to remember what I wore last year since I'm about the same size I was then and I swear  don't remember. Hopefully FB will show me or I might have to go through my intstagram and figure it out. I  have a bunch of loose shirts that I bought last year and yay for getting looser but boo because there's still 20 pounds between me and the summer wardrobe I have in the spare bedroom. OK, I'm rambling now. But it is a lovely segway into today's 5 things....Fashion edition. (queue the trumpets)

1. A few months ago, one of my friends starting selling Lularoe. For those of you who aren't familiar, they sell leggings, shirts, skirts and dresses. Each print only has 1000ish pieces made and they're distributed to consultants across the country so people end up losing their minds over popular prints.

I'm on a few of the BST pages and it's insane how much people will pay for a pair of leggings. Literally, $80+ for a pair of hard to find ones, and those might even be worn. People are paying $80 for used leggings! Look, I have no shame in paying a premium for leggings, but there's a bit of a difference between an $80 pair of Lululemon and $80 for a pair with pizzas on them.

Recently got these cut out crops from lulu. They're amazing.

But you know what, used leggings are nasty. I don't care if they were washed, they were right next to someone's va-jay. Like right there. almost touching. If not touching. It's like wearing someone else's underwear.

2. Romper / jumpsuit season! It is that time of the year again when you have to get completely naked to pee. I just really liked this picture and had to share.

I did draw a bra on the pic because girlfriend just had her boobs hanging out. I'm not modest in the least, but I'd wear a bra with my romper. Now it's more realistic.

3. Going down another clothing tangent, Wednesday I had a terrible gym fail. I left work at 5:10 to get to a 6pm spin class, that's about 10 miles away. Nope. There was an accident on the other side of the road.

Kev was about 1/4 mile ahead of me and we were on the phone talking about how bad it sucked. Any who, I get to the gym, 10 minutes late and go to change. I only have 1 spin shoe. 2 running shoes and 1 spin shoe. Grrr. Then I don't have the correct undergarments. I had on some shape wear under the dress I was wearing which, well, you know if you've worn the full body version. So yea, just went to class late with what I had. Since I didn't get the entire class in, I stayed for yoga, lord knows I needed some centering and peace. Now I have a few pairs of... you know, in my bag, just in case.

Again, why you shouldn't buy someone else's leggings.

4. It's casual Friday and I rarely wear jeans. I'm actually in a skirt today. Lots of people ask why I don't "dress down" and really, I don't like jeans and most importantly, skirts are 8000x more comfortable than a pair of jeans. They just are and dudes don't understand it. Fine by me.

Funny story, when I was a trainer at the cable company I had to police people's wardrobes all the time. I had to send people home to change or to Walmart to buy a pair of pants because they weren't supposed to be wearing jeans or I could parts of them that should be covered. Don't even get me started on the shoes. I saw so many pairs of platform hoochie shoes, it was ridiculous.

One day, after everyone had left, there was a pair of stripper shoes under the table where one of them was sitting. How they got to their car, or forgot that they left their shoes in class, I'll never know.

I asked the person who was sitting there and she said they hurt her feet but she had socks in her purse so she put them on, wore them to her car and left her shoes. Now, maybe I'm out of touch and not that hip, but, if your shoes hurt your feet so badly that you can't wear them while sitting for 6.5 hours per day, you need new shoes.

5. Have you heard about "Chubbies"? They're essentially shorter shorts for dudes.

One of my folks came in wearing a pair and I thought I'd have to have an akward conversation with a guy about the length of his shorts. Over the course of the day, the rest of the team teased him mercilessly about his short shorts. We've never seen them again. Problem solved and Lara didn't have to get involved.

Happy Friday!
